I will have to admit that I am envious of those who wear the latest platform shoes with very high heels. I am even more envious when I see someone wearing those and walking gracefully without a trace of visible discomfort. We have all heard the saying that you are only as old as you feel. Well, for the most part, I feel pretty good and feel younger sometimes than others, but I stick with what I know to be good taste in fashion when I try on clothing or shoes that were obviously not made for anyone in my generation.
Finding clothing today that is age-appropriate and appropriate for business is getting to be a difficult task. I don’t know about you, but I am finding that many of the stores today have rack after rack of clothing items that all look alike, and none of them seem to be appropriate for business or even proper casual dressing.
To be taken seriously in the business world, one must dress the part. That might mean we must search a little harder and longer for that proper business suit or dress and focus on quality rather than quantity. If the right suit or dress is found, grab it! That right suit or dress will prove to be a very good investment for you, as you’ll have it for many years and many business meetings.
It seems we are getting more and more casual in our dress these days. I know there is a lot to be said about being comfortable, but sometimes comfort is taken a bit too far when it comes to how we dress in public. The other day I saw a young woman out and about in her pajamas and fuzzy slippers. I commented to someone that it looked like the woman was wearing pajamas, and was told this is something new and to expect to see more of it. While that may be very comfortable, it just does not seem appropriate for any age.
Needless to say, you will not be seeing me out and about wearing my pajamas, but I will keep looking for that right business suit or business dress. When I find it, I promise to buy the right size, too. It is always a mistake to buy clothing that is too tight with the intention of going on some starvation diet to fit into the item in a few days.
