December has moved in, wrapped its bright, satiny bows around us, and is broadcasting official reminders on every radio station that the number of shopping days is disappearing like tinsel from the American Christmas tree. If the shopping list tucked into your wallet has a few empty spaces or a couple of question marks, we have a list to help you finish up, leaving you time to sip and sing your way to Christmas.
For the grandparents
When grandparents come to see children, they come with gifts. During the holiday season, it’s time to give back. Fortunately, gifting to a grandparent is best when it includes the kids. Most of them jump at the opportunity to spend a little more time with the grands. At The South Carolina Children’s Theatre, the playbills are set for the spring and summer season. Greenville children love seeing other children perform, and love it even more when grandma and grandpa take them. In addition to plays, SCCT also offers Kindermusik classes. Rosalind Cross teaches music to children with dance and movement. This is the ultimate gift for parents and grandparents alike, as the classes require an adult to accompany the children. Classes are small and oh so sweet, with props like balls, scarves, shakers and giant lollipop drums that will keep the little ones shaking and singing for years to come. The kids love it almost as much as their chauffeurs, and together the bond will grow over music. Winter classes begin Jan. 16, 2010. More information can be found online at scchildrenstheatre.org.
For the cook
Everyone who loves to cook also loves a new cookbook. This year, The Open Book suggests “The Lee Bros. Simple Fresh Southern” by Matt Lee and Ted Lee, brothers who bring a new twist to the Southern cooking by combining old recipes with new ideas. Within the pages of their newest cookbook are recipes for greens, red velvet cake, frogmore stew and a new ambrosia salad made with fresh fruits and a buttermilk dressing. Southern style is still king in the cookbook, but it wears a light and healthy robe. Make no mistake, this is the cookbook to give this season. Meet the Lee brothers on Wednesday, Dec. 9, at the Open Book and add a signature to enhance a special treat.

For the modern man
Sleek flasks made of stainless steel snug in rich leather, coffee table books adorned with travel photographs and Italian-inspired picture frames are all delicately placed alongside the display of vintage foundry patterns. The gifts are plentiful and hard to pass up at the chic shopping experience, Chloe and Grace, in McDaniel Village. Melissa and Jim Voss , owners, are as welcoming as they are versed in travel and design. While every man is different, you are sure to find a treasure for him here.
For the teacher
A simple but eye-catching piece from Handpicked is just what you need to remind the teachers what good students you are raising. Handpicked was created to assist Mexican village markets. Shoppers find lovely silver pieces for personalization as well as trendy, beaded and classic necklaces. Don’t worry, the pickers don’t forget the males. Bottle openers, cuff links and money clips in shiny silver are also available.
For the weary
Old Edwards Inn and Spa in Highlands is a short drive from here to heaven on earth. Signature holiday cocktails, fireside stories and movies and “Comfort & Joy” spa treatments are in the mix and available. Don’t forget about New Year’s Eve. For the hall decker
Kate Tierney and her helpful staff at Twigs have an abundance of glorious holiday creations for the front door, the mantle, the dining room table and anywhere else one might want to add a fresh yet festive piece to their home this season. The staff at Twigs promises a design that is creative and unique balanced with classic quality. Adorning a home with fresh greenery during Christmas adds a touch of natural beauty. This gift is as precious to family and friends who come to visit as it is to the recipient.
For the well-dressed baby, tot or tween
Treasures for the closets of little people are like no other. Delicate dresses, fun play clothes and accessories to match help keep the little ones looking sweet as they try to be nice before Santa comes to town.
For mom
Wendy Lancaster, owner of Vignettes, highly recommends adding a bracelet to mom’s jewelry box this year. “The Camilla beads are beautiful and are like putting a family album around your wrist,” she says. “There are crosses, sparkles, holidays birthdays, hobbies — over 600 beads in this line. It’s more popular than it has ever been. All the beads are sterling, 14k or over, or Murano glass. For a less traditional and more whimsical look, the Trollbeads line is also popular.” From jeans and a sweater to formal evenings on the town, a bracelet from Vignettes will be the perfect accessory.
