Feeling the need for an update? Warm weather always brings out the best in those of us who like to get rid of the old and bring in some new — to our homes, that is. The time has come to make some changes, and the best part is, it doesn't have to take the whole month to get a new look, thanks to a few tweaks and help from our professionals.
Changing wall color is the best way to change the overall look of a room, according to Elizabeth Mann , owner of Elizabeth Mann Designs. “The current trend is toward a very light wall. Shades of whites and grays are very popular right now. If you like to showcase vibrant artwork, it shows best when the backdrop doesn't compete with the art,” Mann says.
Speaking of choosing bright artwork, and beautiful accessories, have you taken a trip to Emily Austin lately? On every wall, in every corner, are jewels for your home. Owner Melinda Lindsay suggests choosing neutral walls and adding pops of color to create drama and interest in the room. Natural accents are very popular and look great in place of the heavier pieces which may have been used to decorate last winter. “Take the heavy and dark accents out of the room, move them to the back of the house and replace them with lighter vases, frames and pillows for summer,” suggests Lindsay. “It isn't necessary to throw out everything and start from scratch to get a new look, just remove what looks cold and dark and lighten it up with small, fresh pieces.”
And of course, what's springtime without the smell and beauty that comes from fresh flowers and plants? Here you will find the perfect way to get your pop of color without popping the budget. Ann Sparkman, owner of Martin's Nursery, suggests incorporating plants that transition well from your dining room table to the front yard for years of enjoyment. Hydrangeas, gerber daisies, hibiscus and geraniums are a few choices that will work beautifully on your mantle and will stick around for cutting next year.

“To update your traditional and tired spaces, add a few modern accents, but don't go overboard with the accessories by choosing too many textures, too many colors or too many pieces. The accessories are meant to complement a beautiful space but not confuse the eyes.”
