As the temperature rises and the days last longer, there’s no denying that summer is just around the corner. And, whether you have all summer to get away or just a long weekend, here are some ideas for eco-friendly vacation stays.

Dobson House, Taos, New Mexico

Dobson House is a top-notch bed and breakfast that just happens to be built out of all adobe and recycled materials. Decorated with a Southwestern theme, the eco-friendly stop is located next to the scenic Rio Grand Gorge and there are a variety of outdoor activities to keep guests busy such as llama expeditions and enjoying the pollution-free night sky where you can actually see the stars.

Kanimbla View, Australia

Described by the Travel Channel as an “eco-tourist’s dream retreat,” the Kanimbla View resort is made with the earth in mind. Each building was designed to be environmentally friendly without sacrificing the comforts you expect on your international vacation. Plus, the entire retreat is powered by solar energy and is located on a wildlife refuge. While staying there, guests can explore the wilderness with guided tours, go biking, golfing, bird watching, or travel to nearby Sydney, one of Australia’s most popular tourist cities.

Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort

Located in the heart of the village of Lake Placid, New York, Golden Arrow Lakeside Resort is the only resort in the United States to have received the Audubon Society’s 5 Green Leaf eco-rating for hotels. From a green roof that provides insulation and storm water management to a white sand beach made of limestone to help counteract the effects of acid rain, the resort offers a truly eco-friendly experience. Guests enjoy a magnificent panorama of Adirondack Park -- the largest protected area in the contiguous United States, greater in size than Yellowstone, Everglades, Glacier and Grand Canyon National Parks combined!

The Galapagos Islands

If you plan on leaving the States and want to see your fill of nature and untouched wilderness, head to the beautiful Galapagos Islands. Described by environmentalists as one of the last “great wild places,” the islands contain one of the most fragile ecosystems in the world and provide a variety of outdoor activities and adventures. Most travel companies will even provide tours of the entire island, which allow you to get as close to nature as possible.

Centro Ecologic Sian Kaman (Celiac), Mexico:Close to the Mayan ruins of Tulu on the Yucatan Peninsula is the Sian Kaman Biosphere Reserve, the largest protected area on the Mexican Caribbean. Situated in raised cottages guests are immersed in the 1.3 million-acre mix of beach and wetlands. Celiac runs completely on sun and wind energy and uses rainwater for water needs. Guests can fish, bird watch, hike, or simply relax with a thick book in a hammock. All proceeds fund education and conservation programs at Sian Kaman.
